Of paradise and perdition: our ordeal flying with Zestair.

UPDATE: I sent this to CAAP, CAB, DTI, DOTC and Mr. Tony Fernandes
I am thankful for the immediate response of all the government agencies I sent this to.
Mr. Tony Fernandes also responded to the complaint.
It was resolved 2 weeks after I lodged my complaint letter.
Zestair thru Airasia called me to apologize for the stress they have caused and even offered to give us roundtrip tickets to any local destination which I refused and never accepted. The apologies made via the phone call and thru email were enough.

Of paradise and perdition, our ordeal flying with Zestair.
This is a complaint letter against Zestair that I would like to share with you.

To give you a backgrounder, I booked a flight via Air Asia Philippines but was diverted to Zestair.
Air Asia is known as a good budget airline company and I have flown with them years ago so I was just happy to book with them again.
I was just surprised that their local flights are via Zestair. I thought the service will be the same if not better.
But it was the worst.

We unfortunately flew with Zestair for the first time last August 14-17, 2013 and we super regret it.
Our flights are as follow: Aug 14 Wed Z2 308 Manila-Kalibo 940AM
Aug 17 Sat Z2 301 Kalibo-Manila 1225 PM

First off, our flight Manila-Kalibo was supposed to leave at 940AM, there was no rain at all but it was moved to 1020AM due to 'aircraft situation'.
We were asked to board the plane at around 1020 AM but left Manila at around 230 PM.
We were inside the aircraft for almost 4 hours. According to the pilot, there was an air traffic in Kalibo.
We were asked to board the plane already, isn't it a cue that any moment we can already fly?
I can accept a 30-minute delay but 4 hours! Inside the plane? That's just plain reckless.
What if something happens outside and we're trapped inside the plane.

And given that situation and since there was no commitment from Kalibo to land our plane,
Zestair should have at least provided food and water but no they didn't provide any.
They said it's not their fault. There should be accountability to the passengers in this case regardless if it's the airlines' fault or whoever's fault.
We're all at the receiving end despite paying on time and in full.
The Koreans were already demanding food and they requested and pleaded to let them go out since they have kids who are hungry already but Zestair did not budge.
We were left with no choice but to wait inside the aircraft until we can. Famished and thirsty at that.

That was just the first ordeal.

Going back, they were already suspended by CAAP for numerous violations.
So on our return flight Kalibo-Manila, all flights have been cancelled.
They sent us a message at an ungodly hour of 1130 PM informing us of the cancellation of our flight while we're having our dream vacation in Boracay.
They gave us a number to call but no one is answering. We left a message on their facebook account but no one is answering.
What can we do at 1130PM? In a place not familiar to us.

We went to the airport earlier because we know that there will be chaos and glad we did.

Since all flights are cancelled, we were transferred to Iloilo airport to fly via PAL or Cebu Pacific.
That was our understanding. No one is quite in charge. There was no explanation or instructions.
We were left alone to check or to ask for what will happen to us. Lines were piling up.
We asked someone from the check in counter about the situation and she said that we will be transferred to Iloilo.

When the bus arrived, they just herded us like cows in front of the Kalibo airport. No explanation again as to who will be the first to ride the bus. A fellow passenger even said that we have to group ourselves into 12 so that we can ride the bus or whatever. Because no one was in charge, we were left hanging in limbo. After what felt like years, we were asked to board the bus (Southwest).

It was a 4-hour bus ride going to Iloilo. We were confident that since they already know the suspension and since they know they have passengers booked with them, they have at least rented/chartered planes or make arrangements with other airlines for the passengers affected and since they have managed to book us a bus to go to Iloilo airport, they have at least already arranged our flight out.
But no! When we arrived at the Iloilo airport, there was no system at all. Foreigners and locals are complaining.
The check in counter was even manned by OJTs at this critical hours!

They listed our names just before we left Kalibo.
So we were at least confident that they would just call our names and bring us to either PAL or Cebu Pacific for booking but again they failed.
They just keep calling our names, lining us up again and again but no arrangements have been made.
We weren't able to eat a good meal because they might call us again.
We had to resort to complaining and voices had to be raised before anything can be arranged.
Imagine from 10 AM until 6 PM, no food or water or anything served to us.
We were dead tired and irritated already but they just ignored us. There are kids and infants. And they don't have any system.
We asked why we were almost last to be booked even if our names are way up ahead. They don't have any explanation just that there are people before us.
We insisted that we came in together and that the list will serve as the priority list since we lined up at Kalibo just before we were transferred here but to no avail.

We just want to be home with our baby. That's what we paid for.
We got our flight via PAL Express only after really demanding and raising our voices that we got our flight out at that time.

Clearly, they have violated our air passenger's right.
First, the right to receive the full value of the service purchased
Second, the right to compensation and amenities in case of cancellation of flight
Third, the right to compensation and amenities in case of flight delay

We didn't get the full value of the service we purchased. We were dead tired, famished, thirsty, drained, stressed.
We lost precious time waiting and waiting and waiting when it could have been spent enjoying our vacation with our families.
We lost money since we had to buy our own food and water which are much more expensive at the airport.
More importantly, the unnecessary stress it has brought us when it could have been prevented if only Zestair would be efficient and competent.
And a little more decent. The last thing we need at that time is incompetent people manning the counters.
The least they can do for tormenting us is to offer at least water or even a pack of cheap peanuts.

Manila-Kalibo: We were cranky by the time we arrived at Boracay at around 6PM when we should have arrived 4 hours earlier.
We were just saved by the amazing beauty of God's creation that is Boracay.
This was supposed to be a stress-free vacation, our 3rd anniversary but Zestair made it like hell.

Kalibo-Manila: We were dead tired when we arrived in Manila.
The thought of seeing and hugging our kid again just saved the day for us.

We worked really hard for the money to buy the airfare so that we can enjoy without the hassle of this kind.
We were never late at the airport. We followed their rules and procedures.
We have the right to enjoy the full benefit of what we paid for.

There has to be justice in this kind of bad treatment and unfair practice from this airline.
There has to be one right?

3rd anniversary at Boracay’s Whitehouse Beach Resort

Every year, me and my hubby celebrate our anniversary out of town. This year it was Boracay. I booked online. I emailed White House and got professional and prompt answers to all my inquiries. They require that you deposit half of the total amount and the other half can be paid in cash or thru credit card.

White House is located at Station 1. The secluded, private part of Boracay's white beach. Off peak season at that time so there are just a few peeps on Boracay. No wait, I stand corrected. There are more Chinese and Koreans than Pinoys at that time of August when we went there. The locals informed us that they usually have them (Chinese and Koreans) during the off peak season. But even if we are outnumbered by the foreigners, we still have the beach to ourselves. White House is a very cozy place. More like a home away from home. When they found out that it's our anniversary, they surprised as on our second day with a cute card and potpourri for us. Small things matter and that meant a lot to us.

We had an easy check in. The receptionist Neza was very courteous and accommodating. She is also very friendly. We were even upgraded to de luxe at no extra cost since it was my hubby’s first time in Boracay plus we are on our anniversary trip. The location is superb. Literally just a few steps from the glorious beach. Smack right in the middle of paradise. Love station 1 for its 'exclusivity' and 'privacy' and for having less people. We have an unhampered view of the beach. If you want the action in Station 2, either you walk on the beach or you can take the tricycle at the back. Either way, it is very convenient and accessible.

Fast wifi connection. In our 4 days there, we didn't have any problem connecting to their wifi.

Courteous staff. They greet and smile and are very helpful. Fast service and reply. The smoke detector sounded off in the middle of the night on our 2nd day. After our initial shock, we called the reception and they were there asap. Checked it and removed it asap. Verdict: must be caused by insects.

Their resto is called Station Juan Cafe. Sampled their breakfast. Their omelet is just right. Just the portion, it was kinda small but just fine.

We had a big room and very comfortable beds and pillows. Very neat and tidy. You can dry your wet clothes on the rack outside their veranda. Aircon works well. Always cool whenever we go back to our room after a long walk on the beach.

We also booked our transfers thru them. It was very convenient. Southwest picked us up at the airport and delivered us literally right in front of White House's reception hall. They also brought us back to the airport.

They also have a pool so after the clear water of the beach, we lounge by the pool and ordered from their bar right there at the pool. You can laze at their gazebo or chairs in front of the beach or you can spread your body on the fine white sands of Boracay while enjoying the best sunset view ever with the person you love. That is why the long travel time, the numerous transfers are so worth it.

All in all, it was an amazing trip made more beautiful by White House's great service. We had nothing to complain in our stay at White House.

One thing I've learned from traveling also is that you don't stay much in the room, you go out and explore and be with nature and try different things and smell the beach and stay in the sun and soak up in the water. We travel to make beautiful stories of adventures and misadventures and enjoy the holiday and get lost with the people we love. We meet people and get drunk and watch the sun go down. Boracay is truly a paradise on earth. Nothing compares. And for us I guess that's enough.

Travel Kwento: Hongkong Trip

We had the best time of our lives in Hongkong as my family went this summer for a long-overdue bonding. It was a triple celebration actually – my sister just got her Canadian immigrant visa approved and since she’ll be leaving in June and will not return for 5 years, this is the perfect time to bond. Second is my post-birthday celebration, it has always been my tradition to go on a trip during my birthday in March; I just postponed it to April. Lastly, it was also a dream come true for us and a celebration of the first out-of-the-country trip of my parents, my 3 sisters and my baby Johan. Overall, the sweat, money, sacrifices, fatigue, super long walks are worth it. It was one of those moments that will be forever etched on our hearts.

Trip details

Dates: April 12-15, 2013
Travel Party: 8 adults (2 seniors) and 1 infant (22 months)
Airline: Cebu Pacific via NAIA Terminal
Cebu Pacific and Tiger Airways via DMIA Clark Pampanga
Travel Agency: GJM International
Hotel: Rambler Garden Hotel

Cost of the trip
Airfare: P43, 825.56
Package Tour: P55, 600.00 (This includes HK city tour, breakfast coupon, Disneyland,
Hotel and Roundtrip Transfers)
Additional P29, 520.00 (This includes compulsory HK tip of HK50 each, travel tax,
terminal fees both in Clark and Manila and 8 regular Octopus Cards with HK200 load

Total cost of the trip: P128, 945.56 (meals not included)

This is basically half package tour, half DIY. All of my trips in the past are DIY but since we have 2 seniors and 1 infant and we have already specific places where we wanted to go, I got the package tour that will just require as one whole day of compulsory tour and the rest will be dependent on us. This proved to be economical, easy and convenient for everyone.

Airlines
We left Manila on April 12, I had difficulty booking promo fares for all of us and my mom wanted us on separate flights just in case something happens. (my superstitious mom=) so I decided to group us into 2. I booked my 2 sisters and a boyfriend via Cebu Pacific Manila-HK-Manila while me, hubby, Johan, my parents and another sister were booked via Cebu Pacific Clark-HK and via Tiger Airways HK-Clark. I made sure we both have the same flight schedules so that we will arrive and depart in/from HK airport on the same time.

Airport
It was my second time in Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. The first time, I believed I commuted with a group of friends. This time, we brought our car and parked it on their Park ‘n Fly parking grounds. We left Quezon City at around 230AM and arrived at 530AM. It was the first time for hubby to drive to Clark so we were a little cautious. Plus the fact that it was unfamiliar and super early. I noticed the signs are not that clear and user-friendly. When we asked around, they are friendly and more than willing to help but they have different versions of how long, where to exit so we just go by instincts since hubby had already asked his friends before the trip. There were areas that are too dark and sometimes we felt that we were lost only to find the light at the end of the long dark road literally. What we did is from Commonwealth we drive towards NLEX and we exit at Dau. Then from there we ask some people until we finally got to our destination. We parked inside Clark for P90 pesos per day. Just a little warning, we lost our 4 tire valve caps. Since the parking place is huge and I saw just a few guards, this incident can really happen. Too bad we weren't able to report it. We were already tired and we just want to go home already so I guess we will just be careful and report it next time.

Tour package
As I’ve said this is partly package tour. I decided to get a package from GJM International because it’s practical and convenient. Transactions done via email and phone only, Grace of GJM International was easy to talk to and very efficient and fast. I didn’t have any problems with them so I will definitely get them in the future. For P6, 950.00 each (infant is free), we already have hotel accommodations, breakfast vouchers, roundtrip transfers, city tour and Disneyland. Our itinerary is like this: 1 day tour and Disneyland and 3 days free time. So I made the itinerary for our 3 days like this: Day 1: arrival, Mongkok, Langham Place and rest. Day 2: City tour (Bauhinia Square, HK International Convention Center, Jewelry Store, Aberdeen Fishing Boat Ride, Jumbo Restaurant) and Disneyland. Day 3: Citygate Outlet, Cable Car Ride, Ngong Ping Village, Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Tian Tan Buddha Statue, HK Museum of Art, Avenue of Stars, Ladies Night Market. Day 4: Grand Seasons at Kwai Fong and Maritime Square at Tsing Yi, Mongkok.

Hotel
We stayed at The Rambler Garden Hotel at Tsing Yi Road. This is the container terminal part of Hongkong. There are 3 hotels in the area namely Garden Oasis, Mexan Harbour Hotel and the one where we stayed at—the Rambler Garden. Though far from the city, Rambler Garden Hotel is near the airport, Disneyland , Citygate Outlets, Ngong Ping Village, Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. We already know where we wanted to go so when we booked thru the travel agency, we were given choices for the hotels. But since most of where we wanted to go is near the airport, we decided to choose this hotel. Checking in was fast and easy. They just asked our passports and asked us to deposit HK1000 dollars for the 4 rooms/3 nights which is refundable once you check out. The receptionist is ok. Just be polite I guess and they will treat you right. I had no problems with any of the staff I have talked to. They don’t smile that much but they are pleasant and courteous as well. They don’t speak English that much but they understand simple questions in English. Checking out is also a breeze. Since we were leaving later on that day, we left our luggage at the concierge. You pay HK10 dollars per luggage when you leave it while waiting for your airport pick up.

The room is ok for the price you pay. I mean you get what you pay for. And I have been to HK a couple of times and all hotels I have stayed in (except Hotel Nina in Tsuen Wan West which has huge rooms) were really small. Rambler Garden though small is decent and has high ceiling and has basic amenities like ref, water kettle, cabinet. They provide soap, toothbrush, slippers, towels, shampoo and conditioner (dispenser). The aircon works well. The view is really not to die for (containers and sea view) but ok. I mean I’d rather have this view than the view of another building or back of the building or no view at all. And we went to HK to experience the sights and sound not to stay at the hotel so it’s just ok. If you want to go out, you just ride the shuttle bus to either Tsing Yi MTR or Kwai Fong MTR (fare is HK3.60 dollars) but you can use your Octopus card for the ride. From there, you can go anywhere. Nearest malls are the Grand Seasons at Kwai Fong and Maritime Square at Tsing Yi.

There are 2 restaurants at the lower ground floor (L1) Café de Coral and another restaurant. There are stores like Park & Shop, 7-11, some souvenir shops but they open late and close early. Yes it is really far from where the action is like downtown Hongkong or the shopping areas of Mongkok, Central, Tsim Tsa Tsui but they have efficient train system so you just have to go to the nearest MTR to be where the action is. Yes the location is outside the city but since the places we were visiting are outside the city, the location is just right for us.The place is not Shangri-la or Hilton but given the price we would stay here again.

Going Around
I also computed and bought us our individual regular Octopus cards which came in handy during our free time and when moving around Hongkong. I bought HK200 each regular MTR. This can also be used in several establishments and you can top up (reload) anytime, anywhere. And because HK has efficient mass transport system, everything is just within reach.

Learnings
Traveling is really a test of patience, understanding and endurance. It also made our relationships stronger as a couple, as a family. It also tested our strength during the long walks and it made us appreciate and respect each other more.

Good thing we brought Johan’s stroller, this made life easier especially during long walks and when Johan is sleeping.

It also pays to delegate tasks so that everyone knows their role. Chris is in charge of Johan’s stuff while me and one of my sisters took turns in taking care of Johan. I’m blessed with super nice sisters. One sister is in charge of my mom and the other is in charge of dad. They are both seniors so they needed assistance.

The best thing about traveling with family is it gives you peace of mind and the happiness you feel when you see your parents enjoying is priceless, that no matter what you do or where you go, you will always enjoy the moment because you are with the people you love.
